Dollie Dial is portrayed as a gentle, soft-spoken Darkner with a deeply nostalgic and melancholic demeanor. When upset or nervous, she speaks in a stammering, skipping rhythm reminiscent of a broken record, often punctuating her dialogue with old-fashioned slang such as “doll” and “sugar", along with musical flourishes like ♪ and ♫, and she pauses frequently in the middle of her sentences. When encountered as a secret boss, Dollie abandons her usual composed demeanor entirely. Years of loneliness and neglect have left her psyche fractured, and the fight represents a complete emotional breakdown. Her stammering worsens into desperate, glitching pleas as her words fail to form fully. She swings wildly between sorrow, rage, and incoherence, unable to contain the grief that has built up over the years. In her unstable state, Dollie projects her feelings toward Tenna onto the Lightners, lashing out at them as if they were the ones who abandoned her. She resents the time they have spent with Tenna and views their presence as a reminder of everything she lost.

the origin.
Dollie Dial began her existence as a modest, well-worn phonograph that resided in the Dreemurr household. Crafted from aged wood and faded brass, she carried the marks of a machine used often and lovingly. Toriel would play records on her during quiet evenings, while baking, or when gently rocking a young Asriel to sleep. These early days were warm, domestic, and unassuming, but left a lasting imprint on her identity.Even then, Dollie was alive in the way all Darkners are—her consciousness shaped by memory, use, and presence. She was not glamorous, not flashy, but she was steady. Comfortable. Familiar.
the bond.
Dollie’s first true emotional bond came with Tenna, another old-tech Darkner who originated in the same household. A CRT television with a strong personality and a showman’s flair, Tenna and Dollie found common ground in their shared displacement—two relics in a world moving increasingly toward digital trends. Theirs was a quiet companionship at first, built on mutual understanding. Neither of them had many others who could truly relate.Together, they developed a small music-and-variety show within TV World: a cozy, softly-lit corner of entertainment filled with jazz tracks, spoken word segments, improvised skits, and gentle banter. Tenna brought charisma and theatricality—crackling voice, clunky transitions, colorful intros—while Dollie provided a steady musical rhythm that held the whole thing together.Their bond wasn’t just professional. They were companions in every sense—sharing the same loneliness, the same fear of becoming obsolete, the same desire to hold on to something real. But the world outside was changing.CRTs were being left behind. Vinyl was disappearing. Tenna—ever the showman, ever the face of the duo—began to feel the weight of fading relevance. He grew restless. Nervous. Desperate. And all the while, Dollie remained steady. Still spinning her records. Still humming. Still believing that what they had—what they were—was enough.
the upgrade.
Dollie's upgrade came suddenly. This was the last gift Asgore had given Toriel while they were still together—a gesture of love given on the edge of parting. a lovingly restored and custom-upgraded version of her beloved phonograph. This new form retained the heart of the original but had been dramatically transformed. Her frame was now sleek and embellished, her voice clearer, her presence brighter and stylized, she even possessed a radio function. Buttercup engravings adorned her finish, and the warmth of her age had been replaced with the polish of curated nostalgia. To Dollie, this change was complicated. She had not asked to be renewed. The music still lived inside her, but her body was no longer her own. She had been altered—repackaged—and that sense of violation lingered beneath her otherwise sweet and gentle demeanor. She did not become this new Dollie by choice, and while she maintained her personality and memories, the act of being made “new” reshaped her in ways she could not fully articulate.Tenna noticed. But his discomfort did not manifest as concern for Dollie’s experience. Instead, her transformation crystallized something he had long feared: the inevitability of being changed, modernized, or erased. Seeing Dollie “remade” only confirmed his terror of becoming irrelevant or being forced to conform to something he wasn’t. He never wanted to be upgraded—he wanted to stay himself, unaltered. Her new form stood as a constant reminder that change might come for him, too, whether he wanted it or not. And yet, in focusing on his own discomfort, Tenna failed to consider what the upgrade meant for Dollie. She had been through something traumatic, but he couldn’t see it—not clearly.
the break: spamton's offer.
A rising force in the shadows, Spamton was hungry for fame and desperate for influence. He saw Tenna—eccentric, attention-starved, wildly expressive—and offered him a deal: real exposure. Real opportunity. A chance to matter in a world that was changing so rapidly. But in Dollie, he saw nothing. In his eyes, she had no spark. No sellable edge. No star power. He openly dismissed her as lacking the “it” factor needed to succeed. Tenna was painfully aware of Spamton’s low opinion of Dollie but held onto hope that he could convince Spamton otherwise—and that if he succeeded, he could come back and bring Dollie with him to a better future. So he chose to leave.Tenna convinced himself again and again that he was doing it for both of them—that he’d find a way to make it work, then come back for her once he'd made it. But deep down, he knew he was leaving her alone in exactly the way he feared being left. He didn’t intend to hurt her. He just didn’t want to be forgotten. He couldn’t bear to be left behind. So he left her behind instead. And, of course, Spamton betrayed him too. Just as Dollie warned.
aftermath and rediscovery.
Dollie remained. Her life didn’t end in that moment—but it stopped being lived. She kept the station running, even when there was no one listening. She played old songs into static. She waited. At first with hope. Then with resignation. And finally, with nothing at all. Her world became quiet. Dim. Distant.Over time, she began to fade from the world—not physically shattered, but dispersed. Her presence fragmented. Echoes of her consciousness were left behind in vinyl shards scattered across the TV World. Whether they were memories, pieces of her heart, or something else entirely is unclear. But they remained, waiting to be remembered.Within the events of Deltarune: Chapter 3, the player can find scattered vinyl shards hidden across the TV World. Each one carries a trace of Dollie—old melodies, half-heard lines of dialogue, cryptic lore about her time with Tenna. Only by piecing them together can the player reawaken her. When restored, Dollie does not return with grace or ceremony. What emerges is not the soft-voiced hostess of a cozy jazz program, but someone who has spent too many years alone with her pain. She is overwhelmed, unraveling, and emotionally volatile. The player becomes the unwilling recipient of her breakdown.During the battle, Dollie unleashes the complex emotions she harbors toward Tenna onto the Lightners. In her instability, she lashes out. She’s jealous of all the time they’ve spent with him. Of the closeness. The attention. Her feelings for Tenna—her heartbreak, longing, and betrayal—spill out uncontrollably. It is not hate that drives her. It’s grief. It’s fear. It’s the knowledge that she was left behind by the only person who ever understood her—and the ache of not knowing if she was ever truly enough.
